Documentation of Activities of Daily Living

Federal regulations require all Medicare- and Medicaid-certified nursing facilities to complete a comprehensive assessment on all residents in order to develop an individualized care plan. The Minimum Data Set (MDS) is the foundation for this comprehensive assessment. The MDS is a standardized assessment that takes into account a resident’s clinical and functional status. One section of the MDS, Section G Functional Status, assesses the resident’s ability to complete activities of daily living (ADLs). This complex, but important, part of the resident assessment affects not only the development of the care plan but may also impact the reimbursement your facility receives for services you provide. Accurately reporting a resident’s ADL ability is critical for accurate completion of the MDS. It is important for you to understand the terms used for assessment of ADLs. In this course, you will learn the definitions of each ADL and the coding of residents’ ADL abilities.
